Guidelines and Tips for telling your story.
Start by writing an outline of what you want to tell the world and future generations. If you prefer to upload audio or video recording of your story, it’s a good place to start.
You can post either video, audio, or written versions. We prefer to hear your story in your own words, this may be difficult, awkward or impossible for some veterans.
We will accept a narrated version by a named other as substitute. This option requires a declaration that the content is a true representation of the author’s own words.
Include no more than three pictures of yourself.
Do NOT post anything about involvement in incidents and operations covered by your country’s Official Secrets legal frameworks and orders, or any information deemed sensitive to national interests.
Tips for Your Story Content.
Tell our descendants…
Why you joined the military.
What you liked, what you didn’t like and what could have been done better.
Pick three or four favourite short stories about your life in uniform. Humour always works, avoid excessive detail, have a beginning, middle and clear ending. Pass on lessons and wisdom, insights and conundrums and solutions – how they did things in your unit(s).
Use your voice – first person, for example, ‘I thought…’; ‘it was down to me…’; the dog wasn’t mine…’; ‘my Sergeant said…’ – it’s your story, tell it from your point of view.
Keep it clean, avoid profanities and insensitive language.
End by saying why you left the military and give a final thought!
